Today: A Handwritten Font for Creative Projects

There I was, staring at a blank brand board, trying to find the right visual voice for a new boutique coffee shop. The client wanted something warm, approachable, and slightly whimsical—like the kind of place where you’d linger over a latte and a good book. After testing several fonts, I landed on Today, a handwritten script that felt both authentic and polished. It wasn’t just about style; it was about creating a connection.

The Personality of Today

Today has a soft, personal touch that feels like it was written by hand, not generated by a computer. Its curves are gentle, its strokes vary in weight naturally, and there’s a sense of movement that makes it feel alive. This is a font that doesn’t shout but whispers, inviting the viewer to lean in and take notice. It carries a friendly, almost nostalgic energy, perfect for brands that want to feel human and relatable.

It’s not overly ornate, so it avoids looking cluttered or forced. Instead, it balances elegance with simplicity, making it versatile across different design applications. Whether it’s a logo, a tagline, or a social media caption, Today adds a personal flair without overwhelming the composition.

Testing Today in Real Branding Work

I first tried Today on a logo concept for the coffee shop. The name was simple—just the shop’s name, no tagline. I paired it with a clean sans serif for contrast, and it worked beautifully. The script added a sense of warmth and individuality, while the sans serif kept things grounded and professional. It felt like the perfect balance between creativity and clarity.

Next, I used it on a packaging mockup. The coffee bags had a minimalist design, with a small text block and a large logo. Today looked great at larger sizes, adding a handmade quality that made the product feel more personal. But when I tried it at smaller sizes, like on a label or a business card, I noticed some characters became less legible. It’s important to test how it looks at different scales before finalizing any design.

Where Today Shines

Today excels as a display or headline font. It works best in short phrases, logos, and branding elements where its personality can shine. It’s ideal for creative studios, boutique shops, and lifestyle brands that want to convey a sense of authenticity and craft. On a website header, it adds a unique visual identity, and on social media graphics, it gives content a custom, handcrafted feel.

It also pairs well with other fonts. I found that pairing it with a serif or a modern sans serif helped create a cohesive visual hierarchy. For example, using Today for a headline and a serif font for body text gave the design a refined, balanced look. When paired with another script font, it could work if the styles complement each other, but it’s best to use it as a standout element rather than a secondary typeface.

Limitations and Considerations

While Today is beautiful, it’s not suited for long blocks of text. At smaller sizes, the letterforms can become difficult to read, especially in dense layouts. It’s not the best choice for corporate or formal branding, where clarity and consistency are paramount. If you’re designing for a more traditional or high-end brand, you might want to consider a more structured typeface.

Also, make sure to check the commercial licensing before using Today in client projects. Depending on the license, you may need to purchase additional rights for web use, print, or merchandise. Always confirm what you’re allowed to do with the font to avoid legal issues down the line.

Final Thoughts on Today

Today is a font that feels like it was made for designers who value personality and character in their work. It brings a human touch to digital and printed materials, making it a great tool for brands that want to stand out. Whether you're working on a logo, a packaging design, or a social media campaign, Today can add that extra bit of charm that makes your project feel more authentic.

If you’re looking for a premium font that blends style with usability, Today is definitely worth considering. Just remember to test it thoroughly and pair it thoughtfully to get the best results.
